What is Osteopathic Manual Therapy?

Osteopathic Manual Therapy is a holistic manual therapy, which helps diagnose and treat functional imbalances.

The basic principles of osteopathic manual therapy are the preservation of motion and mobility of all tissues throughout the entire organism. The body carefully balances all vital body systems, which are in constant interplay with each other.

If the mobility of a structure becomes limited, the structure’s healthy function becomes impaired. Over months or years, a variety of tension patterns can develop in the body. The organism often reacts to change over a prolonged period of time with adaptations and compensations. Once the body cannot appropriately regulate the change in function, the person becomes sick and the body develops pain, mobility restrictions and functional disturbances.

The importance of the osteopathic manual therapist is to find the root cause of the problem. With trained hands the osteopathic manual therapist can find functional disturbances, release these and aid the body’s self-healing mechanism.

“To find health should be the object of the osteopath. Anyone can find disease.”
A.T.Still (Founder of Osteopathy)
